Vernonia School District v. Acton
1995
Kids in Vernonia School District in Oregon started using drugs. Athletes were being affected and had a higher chance of getting hurt. The school decided to give everyone drug tests to see if they were taking drugs. James Acton, a student at the school, was denied participation in hist schools football program becausehe and his parents refused to consent to the testing. He then filled a law suit claiming that this was a violation of the 4th and 14th amendments. The court ruled in favor of the Vernonia School District.
This has made a huge impact on me. I believe that the Acton was right and that he should have won the trial. There are some familys that refuse tests, shots, etc. and that doesn't give the school the right to take away his chance of being on the football team. Actually a very good friend of mine was rejected for acceptance into a private school that she wanted to go to just because her family did not agree with shots. She had never had a shot in her whole life, and the school rejected her unless she got all of the shots she needed. She ended up going to a public school in the area. I believe that that was completely wrong and that is why this case inpacted me.
